The chances of this happening to little leaguers is just as high as the chances of it happening to major leaguers. Unfortunately, solving this issue isn’t the simplest thing in the world. It isn’t as easy as 1-2-3. So let’s take a look at each of these problems individually.
When a pitcher can no longer maintain his mental toughness on the field, he will start losing his mechanics, ball movement and velocity. In order to ensure this doesn’t happen, here are some tips to help players keep themselves away from these problems:
- It is important to remember that pitchers succeed against hitters more than 75% of the time. This gives them an excellent edge to start.
- If the first pitch you throw is a strike, this edge goes up quite a bit more.
- The most important pitch is always going to be the next one you throw. It is very important to stay in the present while pitching.
- When pitching, your mind needs to either be empty or focused on getting the ball passed the hitter and into the catcher’s glove.
- The relationship you share with your catcher and your coach is very important as well. Do anything you possibly can while on the field in order to develop strong relations with them.
- Study the opposition carefully. Try and maintain a record of what works against each hitter you face and what doesn’t. This will certainly help you the next time they are in front of you.
- You need to accept and understand that there are some things which just aren’t in your control.
- Remember, you do not have to be perfect. As long as you can throw strikes twice as much as you throw balls, you’re good to go.
- Know what you’re strong points are and what your weaknesses are.
Just because you are in a hitting slump doesn’t mean that there is no way out of it. Remember that anyone can go into a slump at any time. But it is only the strong minded players that are able to come out of them quickly. Just because you are in a slump doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve forgotten how to hit a baseball. Here are some tips that can help you deal with slumps so that they don’t affect you mentally:
- Do not tense up. Try your best to not press. If you do, the problem is only going to become worse instead of getting any better.
- Do not let the slump have a negative impact on you. Do not carry it everywhere with you. Once you’re off the field, move on. Tomorrow’s a new day.
- Just because you aren’t being able to hit the ball well doesn’t mean you can’t contribute in other ways to the team. Give it all of your in the field. Saving a couple of runs is just as valuable as scoring them.
- Even if you are a young player and don’t have any past success to fall back on, don’t worry, your time will come. Positive reinforcement is very important at times like these.
- Constantly remind yourself that anyone who has played the game of baseball has gone through a slump at one time or the other. Even the most outstanding of hitters have not been able to escape hitting slumps. So there’s no reason you should be able to either.
